No More Nut Roast....

No more nut roast, mushroom risotto or some goats cheese monstrosity... the days when restaurants chucked some generic tasteless gloop onto their menu in order to badge themselves 'veggie friendly' are well and truly over.
Mrs Eatwalktalkbristol is definitely a vegetarian and so across time I've increasingly learned just how good vegetarian cooking can be with some true high points being Tian, Vienna; a one Michelin star restaurant and Nobelhart and Schmutzig, Berlin (what those guys can do with a mushroom) and closer to home Casa Mia, one Michelin Star, Bulrush and Adelina Yard all producing some stunning dishes.
Bristol increasingly has a reputation for an amazing food and the vegetarian cafes and restaurants stand up incredibly well here. Here are seven places we happily recommend to our eatwalktalkbristol.com food tour guests.
Our absolute favourite is Flow a hidden gem, down some stairs near the bus station across from the Bear Pit, it produces food that belies it surroundings alongside a decent wine list and friendly service. I loved the small plates concept and when we visited I was so overawed by each tasty little gem they brought that I ditched my instagram addiction and just ate it. For dedicated vegetarian only restaurants we recommend Cafe Kino a local community space run by a coop, in Stokes Croft. Its renowned for its wholesome and tasty food that is sourced ethically and turned into great no thrills dishes that are incredibly cheap. Go and enjoy a gig and something simple to eat. Sit by the window, its a great place to people watch.
We love [Fi Real= http://www.fireal.co.uk/], a Caribbean Vegan cafe in the heart of Old Market. Great flavours and a menu that keeps you coming back for more. I love the cakes as much as the dumplings and curry quorn but its the big hit of spice that keeps you wanting to go back.
Another favourite on our monthly vegetarian tour is Eat a Pitta, we visit their St Nicks Market unit but they have 4, soon to be 5 others and their success is based on a pretty simple principle. Lots and lots of salad, hummus and falafels made fresh daily and served with a smile by their friendly team.
if you need something more restauranty but aren't in the mood for the fine dining vegetarian options you can't go wrong with The Thali Cafe. It does serve some meat dishes too but we hit them up for their fantastic Thoran, Dhals and bondas. On the weekend we love to go and enjoy a masala dosa, as large as the table with a mango lassi or chai tea, Its the perfect brunch.
They have started a relationship with Meera Sodha and I was lucky enough to sample their Christmas special (photo credit their website). She has an amazing book called Fresh India which is a fantastic read for Vegetarian food options.
Souk Kitchen serves sumptuous vegetarian dishes and its one of our favourite places to eat. Its North street / Raleigh Road location; home of Upfest, has an amazing Odeith picture on the external wall but its the food we go for. Voted best Mediterranean restaurant in Bristol Good Food awards 2016, it has flavourful vegetarian dishes but we absolutely love the Shashouska.
Our final recommendation, Birch is a fantastic neighbourhood restaurant a little further along Raleigh Road. It serves seasonal fresh food with many of their ingredients coming fresh from their own field a short distance away. Its a lovely little place converted from a former off licence with a small but friendly team that really make you welcome. Chef Sam Leach, elevates every ingredient to another level and quite simply, makes you happy - vegetarian or not?
